early in the evening...
early in the evening...
...and this is some of what we've been tasting.
a few whiskies later...April 10:th
Avoiding scotland like the plague, we turn from Japan to Sweden, in some sort of misguided streak of nationalism. Mackmyra was the theme of the evening, and the preludium series (apart from preludium 01 which nearly poisoned us a while back).

All in all, none of them were any massive whisky experiences, but nonetheless very interesting to try early expressions of a swedish single malt. Following the whisky, we tried Oppigårds Golden Ale, Nils-Oscar India Ale, Jämtlands Pilgrims Ale and Bedarö Bitter - where Nils Oscar really stands out in a beautiful way. Tasting notes for the whisky, still in Swedish (well, it was a swedish theme tonight, wasn't it)

November 14:th tasting - turning Japanese!

After tasting a couple of japanese malts at the Beer & Whisky festival in Stockholm, the decision was set in stone: the next tasting should be of only japanese malts. Said and done, malts were ordered, and the ones we tasted were:
Nikka All Malt
Undefined age-wise, this started off slightly anonymous, but given time, air and few drops of water, it gained tones of pear, vanilla and fruitiness. the adding of water wasn't a very good think in Nikkas case.

Karuisawa 12 yo pure malt
The second vatted malt of the evening took a nice turn in a more sherried direction, and with the added depth of the 12 years in the flavours. Tannins all over the place, but well balanced and with a nutty fruitiness in the background. Very short finish.

Nikka Yoichi 12yo single malt
Malty, sweet and the tannins of sherry wreaking havoc in our mouths. Once again a very short finish, and this whisky - as with more or less all of the japanese malts, did not improve with the adding of water. The heavy presence of sherry casks is probably to blame.

Suntory Yamazaki 18 yo single malt
One of the malts we tasted at the festival, and it still stands tall, proud and strong. Before we go all Hammerfall on our descriptions, this also had a very heavy sherry presence, but with the 18 years of aging lending a very pleasant oakiness to the palate. As with the other malts - you guessed it - it didn't like water, and the finish was shorter than a piece of string. Now, if that wasn't a nice buddhist reference, I don't know what would be.

Ichiro's Malt - Ace of Spades, Hanyu Distillery 1985
Ah, this, the king of japanese malts from the now distinct Hanyu Distillery. The Ace of Spades nicely reminds us of our own logo, and is as black as the surroundings of this website. With 21 years in sherry casks, it was a monster of tannins, fruit and raisins with a very well balanced oakiness lurking in the not to distant background. Add water and it became... dry and dead. What happened? the malt we just loved turned into something the cat hardly would have dragged in. Too bad.

After the whiskies, we tried three japanese beers, and without further comments, we will leave them at that.

Discussing the slightly odd results from our tasting with a true expert on japanese whiskies, he confirmed much of our results - in a mix of scotch malts, the japanese whiskies stand out and are very impressive. Gather a selection of japanese malts alone, and the result is slightly disappointing. Can't put my finger on it, but they simply didn't quite deliver to the high standards we demand at the Malt & Metal Society!

The society was guested, as seems to becoming standard procedure these days, by two gothenburgers, Björn and Daniel. If you ever have asked yourself what a Gothenburger might look like, head over to the photos section to check everyone out. This gathering also saw the debut of Honest Nick as well as the highly appreciated comeback of Christer "Liver" Mellström, and also David Stone, who has been taking care of Bates Motel recently instead of doing his duty, educating our lost souls in the art of ale.

Needless to say, the evening ended at Elverket, where we were informed several times by a nervous bartender that they were, in fact, just about to close, and not really that keen on our custom. Get used to it, elverket.

september 22:nd meeting

This was the meeting advertised as "the Great Macallan-Tasting"... but, what to do when mr. Macallan turns in a no-show, and just disappears? The Stockholm Malt & Metal Society don't get fazed, but... we never forget. We asked our Godfather of malt what to do, and he said: "Give this tasting to Clemenza".
So we did.
Hanging on to the sherry cask theme, we tried the following:

The Macallan - 18 yo.
a massive whisky in many ways. No wonder they call it the malt to end all malts (well, we call it that at least). Raisins, dark chocolate, christmast trees and heavy leather couches put this bottle straight up as one of our favourites.

The Macallan dest. 1990 bottled 2007 Coopers Choice Sherry Cask
If the 18 yo gave us the full spectrum of flavours, the CC bottling proved to be a little less wide on the eq of taste. A hint of leather and tobacco whispered in our ears that this whisky probably has a later cut than regular Macallan.

Aberlour A'bunadh - Batch 20. 60.5%
Whoooohaaaaa! despite being quite young (or, perhaps because it is), the a'bunadh packs a heavy punch. and noone loves a good round of boxing as the Malt & Metal Society.

Aultmore - Gordon & Macphail Refill Sherry Cask. dist. february 1989, bottled december 2006
Not knowing quite what to expect from this slightly anonymous distillery (despite some beautiful pictures taken, courtesy of Micke), we found the aultmore to be slightly salty, tight and rather light for a 17 year old. Like an old 70's record with lots of treble, and less bottom.

Longmorn - Berry Bros. & Rudd. Dist. 1992, bottled 2006. Refill Sherry Cask no: 62549 / 62550
God knows our society loves the grass and agricultural sides of life, so it comes as no surprise that we quite liked the greener notes of this Longmorn. After noting the taste as well-chewed pencil, we felt it was time to move on to our Porters, hand picked once again by david stone (who, once again, did not make it up to town...)

Carnegie
Black Jack
Brewers Choice
St Peters

all in all a great tasting with a few new members showing up (yes Micke, Göran and Per - we're thinking of you), as well as a guest from Gothenburg (hello Daniel). don't forget to head over to the music section for a run-down on what was played during the evening and to the photos section for, well, photos.

May 24:th gathering

As we sat down with our Orkney Malts, we had an inkling that we were in for a treat. Five malts and four ales later, all american micro breweries, we were 100% certain.

Scapa 14yo, original bottling
Round, fruity and somewhat anonymous was our initial verdict. "At least it's not disgusting" as someone said. After comparing with the next one, we up-graded our verdicts to slightly better.

Scapa 1993 Gordon & Macphail
Bottled in 2006, this was a slightly younger bottling, which initially impressed more than the OB, but given time and water, many of us felt that the OB was just that bit better. Not smoky, and slightly complex on the nose, the palate came across as rather thin, and frankly disappointing.

Highland Park 12yo
A good start with the HP-sauce showing itself off immediately, and hinting on bigger things to come. A very impressive twelve year old.

Highland Park 18yo
Recently awarded "best spirit in the world" at one of the big spirit fairs (meaning one of the threehundredandninety held in a year).
Big, round and warming with the honey and sherry tones coming through nicely. A fantastic allround dram, even if it lacked a bit of star-playing character according to some of us.

Highland Park 23yo Royal Mile Whiskies bottling
Which was exactly what could be found here. This is a monster of a whisky, sweet honey meeting a slight smokiness, fruit, wood and a long, lingering taste... Magnificent!

Four american ales were enjoyed after that, before heading into the night, only to find our watering hole Elverket closed. Ouch. A few drinks were had at brat-building bar Annakhan, which was conveniently close and open.

Next time we will probably be looking at some Speyside classics... or something completely different!

August 23:rd - tasting
A good night to be had for those joining in. We set our record straight with 18 people attending (my god, we are becoming a big society!). The main discussion for the evening was of course the swedish malt Mackmyra's Preludium 01, which we opened up with. Apologies, as always, for the tasting notes being in Swedish.

So - thursday 20:th was our most recent tasting, and the theme for the evening was Islay Smoke, and Stout. David Stone selected a few very good stouts for us, but first we hit the whisky! In the music! section, you can see what songs were played during the evening as well. The tasting notes are, unfortunately, still in swedish, but if you'd really want to know what they mean - let us know and maybe we'll translate them for you! They are the spontaneous reactions of the society!

So... all in all we really love the Caol Ila and the Quarter Cask. The stouts will be noted by David Stone under the beer section.
